Hugo Bastidas. American (1956)

A primera vista, las pinturas al óleo de Hugo Bastidas parecen fotografías en blanco y negro que capturan realidades únicas y en ocasiones controvertidas. Su uso del óleo se asemeja a la grisalla y ayuda a crear ilusiones visuales. A través de sus temas inquietantes, Bastidas alerta al espectador sobre temas alarmantes actuales: el calentamiento global, la tecnología y el progreso que afectan a la sociedad y el medioambiente. Aun así, sus pinturas de grisalla tienen elementos de humor que eliminan algo de la seriedad del tema y presentan esperanza. Bastidas es receptor de la Beca de Investigación Fullbright, así como de la Beca de la Pollock Krasner Foundation. Bastidas ha exhibido su obra alrededor de los Estados Unidos y está representado en la colección de varios museos. Bastidas, nació en Ecuador en 1956 y se mudó a los Estados Unidos en 1960. Recibió su B.F.A de la Rutgers University en Newark, NJ y su maestría de Hunter College en Nueva York.

At first glance, Hugo Bastidas’ oil paintings resemble black and white photographs that capture unique and sometimes controversial realities. His use of oil resembles tar and helps to create illusions. Through his distressing themes, Bastidas alerts the spectator to troubling issues at hand: global warming, technology and progress affecting society and the environment.  Even so, his grisaille paintings have elements of humor that remove some of the seriousness from the subject matter and present hope. Bastidas is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship as well as a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. Bastidas exhibits widely in the United Sates and is represented in the collection of numerous museums.  Bastidas, born in Ecuador in 1956, moved to the United States in 1960. He received a B.F.A. from Rutgers University in Newark, NJ and a M.F.A. from Hunter College in New York. He currently lives and works in New York.
