CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS AND THE WORLD CUP
June 11th - July 13th, 2014
Contemporary artists create a special edition of prints for the 2014 World Cup. Among them are William Kentridge, Vik Muniz, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Gabriel Orozco. CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS AND THE WORLD CUP is a selection of 15 limited edition prints on Japanese watercolor paper, that will be shown at NH Galeria from June 11th to July 13th, 2014.
In this exhibition are important figures of the history of contemporary art. Sao Paulo, by Fernand Léger, is an artist’s memory from Brazil; the map of this country by conceptual artist Nelson Leirner is covered in soccer balls; and the works of two representatives of the 80’s pop and street culture, Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, have a fresh and energetic visual language.
Bycicle Kick, created for the 2010 World Cup by South African artist William Kentridge, is reprinted for this edition due to the high demand that it has experienced in the past few years. Vik Muniz and James Ronsequist emphasize the cultural connection of Brazil and soccer with their works Football Player and Brazil.
Allora y Calzadilla, who represented the United States in the Venice Biennale, refer to soccer in their composition with a sense of humor. American Jeff Koons participated with his Pink Bow and Mexican Gabriel Orozco with Blindside Run, from his series, Atomists.
CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS AND THE WORLD CUP includes as well young international artists such as the Brazilian graffiti artist Nunca, whose work is represented in international collections; or Hideaki Kawashima, mentee of Yoshitomo Nara, and one of the Japanese artists of the moment. American Kehinde Wiley depicts Brazil’s new generation with his portrait of a young Afro-Brazilian on a bright color background.
All together create a lively and fiercely contemporary picture of our culture, celebrating the festive, intercultural and sporting atmosphere that we will experience in the summer of 2014.
